Smith Rock, Oregon

2850 feet elevation
Airport: Redmond, OR (RDM)

Though climbing began at Smith in the mid 1930’s, today it is considered “the birthplace of American Sport Climbing”. Smith Rock lies on the east side of Oregon’s high desert plains, with the Ochoco Mountains to the east and the Cascade Mountains to the west. The horizon is lined with the volcanic peaks of Mount Hood, Mount Jefferson, and the Three Sisters. The Crooked River winds its way through the cliffs and spires of this picturesque climbing area. The sweeping faces of welded tuff are perfect for technical face climbing, while the basalt columns of the lower gorge provide clean cracks for traditional style climbing. Smith has some of the nicest camping around and an abundance of wildlife.
